Indoor air quality can be compromised by loose ductwork, leaky door frames and windows, and building envelope issues.

Heat and air conditioning losses in buildings can account for a great deal of the total energy consumption. Infrared imaging has quickly become a valued tool in identifying areas of energy waste due to inefficient HVAC systems and building envelope weaknesses. This technology in our industry has led to easier diagnosis of energy loss and greatly increases the accuracy of test results.

C&W-TESCO uses a FLIR infrared camera to detect heating and cooling leaks – allowing our clients the opportunity to visualize the problems within their space.

Duct Air Leakage Testing (DALT)

All duct systems are subject to leakage. The ideal air duct system is air tight. Due to variations in design, material installation methods and quality of craftsmanship some leakage can be expected in all systems. Duct leakage affects the efficiency of the HVAC system or building because the amount of conditioned air delivered to the conditioned space is reduced. This requires the HVAC equipment to move more air or produce more conditioned air in order to maintain required space conditions. This causes excess use of energy and more wear on equipment. C&W-TESCO performs DALT in accordance to SMACNA standards.

Sound Testing

Building systems with equipment producing excessive noise can be a hindrance to occupants and cause component failure. Sound control in building systems can be a critical to occupant comfort. C&W-TESCO uses sound meters to analyze readings during different modes of equipment operation to determine if a particular system or component is operating within specified noise limits. Motors, fans, and pumps are common sources of noise production.

Vibration Testing

Vibrating equipment can cause noise in tenant spaces, early breakdown of equipment and high repair cost. Vibration testing insures equipment integrity before turn over and establishes a base line comparison for future testing which will enable scheduling of repairs. C"W Tesco uses vibration meters and accelerometers to determine that equipment is within manufactures specs.

Fume Hood Testing (FHT)

The NEBB Fume Hood Testing (FHT) Certification is modeled after the ASHRAE-110 standard. The ASHRAE-110 is a three part test that includes measurements of face velocity, air-flow visualization, and tracer gas containment. This exhaustive test protocol goes beyond face velocity measurement to test the ability of a fume hood to contain and exhaust fumes. C&W-TESCO can perform the NEBB-FHT and provide certification documentation for each fume hood tested.

Ultrasonic Flow Measurement

C&W-TESCO strives to own and maintain the most cutting edge technology in instrumentation. One example of this instrumentation is “ultrasonic flow measurement”. Ultrasonic flow measurement is ideal for flow surveys and closed-pipe applications where non-invasive measurement of liquids is required.

Building Envelope Testing

Whole Building Pressure Testing / Zone & Component Leak Testing

The building envelope is tested to determine the effectiveness of air barriers and the presence of openings. A building’s walls, roof, doors and windows are all subject to air and water leakage, thermal transfer, and expansion and contraction. During building envelope testing, leakage rates are measured under controlled pressurization and depressurization. This performance based option is now required by many designers and is directly tied to building energy use and occupant comfort.

C&W-TESCO utilizes Blower Doors as an extremely accurate method of assessing the building envelope. A fan that mounts into door frames, the blower door creates a pressure differential to expose envelope leakage, which is then measured using a pressure gauge.

We also have the capability to use thermographic imaging to produce visual representations of these envelope weaknesses, allowing our technicians to pinpoint problem areas and recommend optimal solutions.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Testing

The quality of indoor air inside buildings, specifically healthcare and laboratory facilities where air quality is critical, is important not only for occupants’ comfort but also for their health. Indoor air pollutants like radon, asbestos, carbon monoxide, pesticides, and mold and mildew can cause discomfort, disease, and even lead to cancer.

Factors such as poor ventilation, high or low humidity, temperature issues, and recent construction or remodeling can all lead to poor indoor air quality. OSHA has set standards on some of the air contaminants found in IAQ problems. https://www.osha.gov/Publications/3430indoor-air-quality-sm.pdf

C&W-TESCO performs indoor air quality testing to LEED 2.2 requirements. In addition to IAQ testing, we also offer a phased flush-out option. This is possible if different areas of the facility are completed at different times, common in multi-tenant or mixed-use projects. Our samples are sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis and quickly returned for integration in the report.
